I decided to actually read that book recently and finished last night. It's not very long, and of course I knew the story and had seen many movie versions of it before. Still, I found it very good and well worth a read, any time of the year. There are some interesting points that I've never seen any movie really delve into. For instance, it seems to really dive into the insistence (more than movies anyway, other than in a few places it's subtle) on doing good for others as a general principal for all, rather than simply a "well, because Scrooge is a special jerk, he should do good now".
I also found the emotional hits to be stronger than I would have expected considering I knew what was coming basically. So, yea, I guess there's good reason this is such a popular story, and there's good reason to actually read the original.
