Are Comic books and Graphic novels the new literary form?
Ok, Comic book writers and artists are always raising the bar on quality, both artistic and literary, on comics so does anyone think that Comics will soon be a respected literary form? Discuss

Once 'Watchmen' is released, it's going to be public knowledge...but I've known for years. Neil Gaiman, anyone?

Re: Are Comic books and Graphic novels the new literary form?
Comic books arent really "the" new literary form. It's more like a literary form that's been around for years. It's already a respected literary form, even though in a lot areas it's only seen as kids stuff. You even see old people reading them on the bus, so not just for kids I suppose. and that makes me think they are pretty respected since a lot of people read them.

Most so-called "Sophisticated" people dismiss comics as a literary art form. They say it's escapist.

I'll need to get a new copy of Frank Miller's "Batman: Year One".

Re: Are Comic books and Graphic novels the new literary form?
not really new. they've been around for quite some time now.
I think now that they're being made into Blockbusters shows how they're in the big leagues.
Personally, I can't stand them. I much rather read shit line by line... not into pictures and all that and words in the bubble... yadda yadda. I guess the only time i accept it is when it's a comedy cause i don't have to get SERIOUSLY into it.

Re: Are Comic books and Graphic novels the new literary form?
New is a bit relative, but relative to all literature, its probably pretty accurate here. It actually has been respected back and forth in some areas. Sandman issue #19 won a World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story years ago, and, along with Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns, has been on the New York Times Best Seller List. Watchmen has also be listed as one of New York Times Top 100 Novels.
Recently, in my Intensive Reading: Narrative class (an English Major only class), we read Watchmen as our final work of the semester, and examined the question of whether it could be considered a novel (obviously the professor was in favor), and what techniques of the novel it employed along with what new techniques were brought to the table in this new form.
I, in fact, wrote my final paper on the narrator and techniques used for the narrator in Watchmen, an argument to progress the pro that Watchmen is indeed a novel.
If anyone wants further argument, I could post that paper as an attachment, or if anyone is interested. I have a feeling though you guys probably are satisfied without it.
