Dream diary: Parallel universe?
This dream was so fucking realistic, I didn't even realize I was dreaming until I woke up.
-
A gentle hum in the back of my mind and the smell of cigarette smoke roused me. I wasn't good at standing the stuff, so I decided to start looking for the source. I stood up - only for a sharp rap against my head to soundly jolt me from sleep. Opening my eyes, I found myself facing a steel plating. In fact, the whole ceiling was riveted steel platings. I must have been dozing off on a bunk bed or something. Looking down, I confirmed my hypothesis - and saw the source of the smoke. Two people - one man and one woman, both in army fatigues, were sharing a cigarette and talking quietly about something when me smashing my head into the steel must've interrupted them.
Girl A had a weird burn scar on her face, making her look like she tried to push her face through red-hot bars or something. She lit up another as she gave a leery grin. Her silky black hair was cut short, and tied in with simple, dark hairclips. Guy A had a crazy tattoo of a zeppelin fighting a UFO on his back. He looked incredibly familiar, but I can't place him. He mentions that he's going to sleep, and climbs into the lower bunk bed.
"Where the fuck am I?" I ask Girl A.
"Why dont you hit your head on the ceiling again, you tard?" she grins as she lights up another cigarette. "Maybe that'll fix your amnesia or some shit."
I told her I was serious. I had no idea where I was, and why I was here, and why I was wearing green boxers to sleep.
"They told me the squad captain was a nut." she sighs, exhaling a large wad of smoke. "I didn't believe it at first. Thanks for proving me wrong. Now why don't you go outside?"
There was a greenish-yellowish-green jumpsuit with my name on it. Slipping into it, I walked out of the 'dorm', followed the signboards and climbed a staircase into the frigid air. That's when I realized I was not exactly on land. Ocean met my eyes as far as I could see. That soft hum I heard was the roar of the waves as they were cut apart by the forward-swept hull. The flat deck was marked with lines. I had a sinking feeling as I realized I was onboard a really large aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean.
Far away, I noticed some crew members working on some jets onboard. They saluted at me, and I waved back. That girl I met in the dorm (barracks, to be precise) mentioned that I was a squad captain. Huh, who knew? Well, that was one mystery solved. Now I had to figure out how the hell a nearly-blind basement-dweller like me managed to score some rank on a fucking aircra-
The roar of the ship's klaxons cut through me, making me jump at least a foot high, and unceremoniously smashing my head to the low ceiling of the passageway. The placid, slow ship suddenly frenzied, crew and support teams running this way and that. "Hostile sighted! Hostile sighted! All combat personnel, report to hangar for immediate deployment!".
The hangar? That must've been the direction I saw the jet being tended to. I turned to run, when the deck lurched, and to my right, I saw a huge wave smash through the deck! I barely managed to avoid being swept overboard, by some last-second instinct when I hung on the guiding rails in the hallway. This water tasted funny. I was expecting brine, but it tasted more like day-old fish or something!. Throwing up, I ran back to the deck. The jets had survived the large wave, too, thanks to the zip lines attached to it.
The scene was pure chaos. Screaming, blood and barked orders everywhere. I quickly scrambled into the jet's cockpit, strapped myself in and put on the helmet. As oxygen began to blow from the gas mask, I heard that girl's voice.
"Oh good. You're alive. Get in the air, and I'll join you in a bit."
Nodding, I began to gear the jet for launch. How the fuck was I doing this? How did I know?! My hands hit the throttle to maximum, and the jet's engines roared. There it was again. Another roar, and the ship convulsed. This wave was smaller, a wave of water splashing at the hull. From the corner of my eye, I saw one of the technicians on the floor, her head bleeding from a sharp cut. She and her team continued to work, and the zip lines were detached. I muttered 'take off every zig' as I went airborne.
"Okay, so you're airborne." Girl A responds on the headset. "I guess we're not fucked.... Patrol around the ship and keep our gunship covered. You see something going for it, fuck its shit up. Shoot first, ask questions later."
I scanned the radar, and the view of the sky above. "I don't see any hostiles." I said.
There was a silence at the other end. "We're fucked." she sighs. "Look down, you fucking idiot."
I shouldn't have.
The creature... thing was vast. judging by the trailing armlike appendages in the water, it must've been longer than the carrier itself. A large, gaping mouth filled with squirming yellow teeth that wriggled as it continued to grip the hull, thrashing it, causing the ship to shudder and quiver. Smaller, spiked appendages sawed at the hull proper, trying to cut it open. I saw the ship's attack gunship flying closer to the mass of flesh held above the sea level. Two more fighter jets took off, narrowly avoiding the thing's tentacles, and joined my formation. The beast's body glowed a hypnotic green and blue under the waves.
"You do know how to fire, right?" she asks again. "Let me know because we won't have time to fuck around once it tries to defend itself."
As she said so, I saw a mass of flesh rise up from the ocean depths. "KILL IT WITH FUCKING FIRE!" she screams, as she fires off two rockets into it. I nod and fire a salvo myself. The fleshy mass unfolds more tentacles, that reach towards the gunship - only to have several dumbfire missiles smash into the flesh. An inhuman screech that I felt through the jet filled the air, as the mass of tentacles withdrew back into the sea. The gunship is now floating squarely over what appears to be an even larger mound of flesh. It then drops a large canister that explodes into a grey-yellowish mist. Fire! The jellylike substance settles on the skin of the monster, igniting into a searing white fire. The creature screams as it is forced to let go of the hull, and it tries to thrash away the fire. Exposed to more oxygen underwater, the 'napalm' grows in strength, burning into the creature. The gunship and our fighter squadron begin to blast more explosives and rockets, until with a final shudder, the beast lies dead.
I land my jet, a bit unnerved by what I have seen. My team lands a bit later - apparently they tore it apart with GAU-cannon fire, just to make sure it was dead.
Guy A and Girl A were both on the same team as I was 'leading', and here they came now, boasting on who had the higher 'tentacle smackdown'. She recognized me, and with a grin, addresses me as 'Captain Forgetsalot.'. I shake my head and am about to tell them that I still had no idea what I was doing here when...
A black, spiked armlike appendage ripped through the carrier. Towering over the carrier superstructure, it lanced through the whole ship like a knife through butter. I heard the sickening groan of metal being torn asunder, as the ship buckled in two. I lost my footing and fell into the sea. The suddenly black sea, and I realized it... THATS NO SEA!
I fell in to darkness and silence.
And I woke up sweating.
