I'm all like: 'par for the course, what did you expect'?
Seriously though, I've apparently been on the distant political fringe so long these things don't even look particularly different than normal, and I'm not particularly worried. The patterns were predictable, the people upset about it, or claiming to be, were really helping the outcome come about in several instances, and we'll have a crappy president most likely. That was already going to be the case, and it's been the case for decades.
I guess part of the comforting thing for me is I simply don't believe a word almost anyone from any dominant party says in an election, and thus we really have no idea what will happen when anyone is elected. The depressing side of that is I tend to expect it's more likely that the promises I think are terrible will get closer to fulfilled, but I typically hold that no matter whom from the dominant parties came to power those things would be put into action.

People have hope. Good for them, I suppose. I just view that hope as stupid(don't tell my girlfriend, she's already mad I didn't vote in the primary).
Personally, I've never had a candidate I'm truly behind. Neither party really fits what I view as the best step forward, and I doubt we will ever have anyone that moderate again.
Re: So, people are all downhearted about primary outcomes an
I've never voted in a primary, because I'm not affiliated with any primary (and we have closed primaries around here), so I can't vote in primaries.
But yea, the dominant parties may as well all be the same. Much of the third parties are only slightly better... sometimes. I've only once seen a dominant party candidate (not nominee, mind you) that I found acceptable, though not necessarily great for many reasons except by comparison, and so many hoops were jumped through to ensure he didn't get the nominee it was rather disgusting. I mean, I've basically conceded to the idea that it's at various level just a sham anyway, but I used to think they were doing at least a passable job with the show of it.

I'll admit my knowledge of American politics and legislative systems are limited, but last time I heard about it, the senate was cockblocking a large portion of what presidents try to do. So in all likelihood, no matter who gets elected, they probably won't be able to do much at all from what I've seen. Which if true would mean all those people complaining about Trump setting the White House on figurative fire should just take a chill pill and calm the fuck down.

At the moment, Senate is Republican controlled. That generally means, if we had a republican president, things would go through. However, with how much people dislike Trump in both parties, I'm not entirely sure it would work that way this time around.

Re: So, people are all downhearted about primary outcomes an
It's not just Trump people hate. People also hate the candidates put up on the democrat side, especially hillary who looks right now like she'll get the nomination, and they really aren't that fond of the other possibilities on the republican side either.
In any case, Senate and House can push through bills, and override vetos with a large enough majority (2/3rds) but that's time consuming and only applies to typical legislation. Unfortunately, we've essentially shat on the constitution a few times over so that the normal checks and balances don't work very well any more, and Congress has continually given the executive branch more power. While technically, many things people talk about for the presidency the president has no power over whatsoever (budget, for instance), practically, he has way more power than he should (the power to, for instance, abduct or kill any U.S. citizen at any time without ever giving reason, warrant, explanation or even acknowledging it happened). The president has powers of "executive orders" now as well, which are psuedo-laws. The president can decide to go to war without congress declaring war (in fact, congress hasn't declared war since WWII in our country, yet we've been almost continually at "war"). Congress can theoretically block funding to various actions, but politics will lump enough things together that it will look terrible politically, regardless of other factors.
Hey, no one likes that we suddenly declared war on all of Europe? Doesn't matter, if you don't vote for the war budget, they'll run a smear campaign about how you don't want our precious soldiers (read by most the country as 'heroes' or, for some reason, 'cute little innocent puppies') to have any armor and thus you want them to all die.
That all said, it really doesn't matter. I don't see Trump, or Hillary, or most the others, as particularly worse than every other president in the last several decades. Again, it's not like what they say on the campaign trail is meaningful in any fashion, and they all will just do a bunch of shit.
