I loved Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. then they never made a proper 3D sequel. then yoshi's island was announced and everyone was ecstatic, then it came out and... everyone told me it was disappointing. then I recently got a rom of it working and.. it was unbearable. Spiritual Successor? more like a very very far flung bastard of a spiritual successor. mostly because they didn't know how to actually recreate the game play elements from yoshi's island, such as the bouncing eggs, they had no idea how to calculate angle in =angle out into the 3D game space, so instead the eggs just flew at a tangent and exploded at a max distance. having broken one of the main elements of the gameplay everything else soon became one poorly thought out idea after another. I can almost hear the developers: "we can't do bouncing eggs" "crap, we'll have to rethink all the game-play elements then!" "well I too have bad news, I.. couldn't figure out how to do the melons" "fuck... well we already made the graphics for them so.. I guess we'll just have yoshi eat the fruit and collect them for some stupid bonus. please tell me everything else still works." "well, the stomp works but I can;t figure out how to make it drive down pegs or destroy stuff beneath it," ".... oh well.. it's still some manner of a game.. lets just finish it, sell it and get the hell off this project." someday, when I find time I will make a decent yoshi game. but time is the problem usually. I have so many projects, and I work on them all but they each take mass amounts of time to complete, so working on any of them cuts off time I work on others and they never seem to get done. but hopefully that will change, I'm making faster progress on everything lately. |
