But were too black? Black like a cuppa joe at the diner down on 34th street.

Black like the New York night sky under pendulous rain clouds.

Black...like a dame who doesn't know when to stop running her mouth like a Victrola record.

It was raining that night, as she walked into my office. Legs that went on forever, a dress that looked like she was poured into it...and she needed a private eye. I could tell from the terrified look on her face and the deepest pleading in her eyes that someone was after her and I was gonna find out who.

...she offered me $300 if I would take her case. With that kind of money, I could buy a burrito. Or a suit! Or a burrito AND a suit at that all-night burrito and suit store off of 3rd street! Wait a minute...that place doesn't exist. DAMN!
