It's my opinion. It doesnt mean I'm ignorant. Wait. They teach about NIN in school? Man, the curriculum must be really going down hill now.

Actually they very likely do in various music classes and rock history classes (yes they very much exist in respectable institutions), as well as in various lyric literature classes.

Nine Inch Nails is rather influential and actually one of the higher caliber intellectual music acts that is popular and gets radio play. Unfortunately, a lot of the brilliance is lost in the incomplete picture alot of people get, for instance when you only hear Closer or March of the Pigs or Heresy from The Downward Spiral album and don't understand that its part of a big concept album, ending with "The Downward Spiral" and "Hurt" (which luckily alot of people have heard), which arguably shows how everything that came before was actually a mistake and fallacy and leaves you with nothing: The hedonism, greed, so on and the rejection of morality and spirituality leaves one empty and in worse pain and despair than they imagined.

And, its actually not an opinion. Emo is actually a particularly defined musical genre with various distinct, though of course somewhat fluid as with everything, characteristics. In general it happens to be part of a offshoot of, I believe, post-hardcore punk (possibly hardcore, I can check some sources later, wikipedia indicates hardcore but I think thats wrong). It has evidence of such influence and has various other characteristics (mostly sucking).
Nine Inch Nails comes strongly from a rock and electronic background originally, in the beginning primarily being dance/rave music. To a degree they may fall in the Industrial Metal category, but I'd argue that isn't really a proper placement. In any case, they are far from being emo.
