Drive setup
I'm thinking of implementing this setup
IDE1 Hard drive 150 GB C: Operating System D: Normal every day files Hard drive 150 GB E: Page file F: Temporary files IDE2 Hard drive 150 GB G: Avi files H: Stuff I'm going to back up to CD DVD/CD-RW combo drive I:
And I was thinking of geting a SATA PCI adapter card and stick SATA drives in there for shits and giggles, but I think I'll build a new PC to try out SATA drives.

Re: Drive setup
Then I would recommend just getting the SATA adapter and SATA HDDs. They are generally better for speed and space, and are getting really cheap for really high capacity. I've seen a lot of 1TB drives for less than $90 lately, internal and external. 500+ GB drives for around $50. But most/all of these that I've seen are SATA. Far more worth it to go for the larger capacity and SATA, I'd say.
Not sure why you want to partition up your HDDs so much either for what you're doing. Seen plenty of problems with that kinda thing, unless you simply want that for fragmentation purposes, or if you plan on using different formats for different areas.

Re: Drive setup
I like split my drives up because it makes finding my files easier. So if I ever need to find some files I dont use much I just open up the run menu, type in the path of the folder I want and then it's on my screen in seconds.
It also makes some stuff easier like maintaning my drives, scanning for malware, and backing up files. And if one of the drives seriously screws up having things in seperate partitions minimizes the damage. It also like you said reduces fragmentation, even though it doesnt make much difference sometimes fragmentation can really screw things up.
I also plan to play with Linux one of these days, I might even leave some unpartitioned space somewhere so that I can do that. I just dont know a lot about Linux and dont really want it on my system until I can figure out all the little idiosyncrasies of dual booting it with Windows

Re: Drive setup
I find it just as easy to do that by organizing folders, but whatever, sort as you want.
The only real tricky part about dual booting is restoring the GRUB, and that's just a matter of looking it up I guess.
But still, I recommend just going for that SATA ports and larger HDDs.

Re: Drive setup
I guess I might as well get larger than that. Hard disk space is always a great thing. It's just 150 GB for what I like to do seems like a freakishly large amount of space.
Yeah organizing the folders is important, though I dont like sticking a lot of my stuff into the my documents folder. Ussually for things like documents, pictures and what not I make a seperate folder somewhere and then I point windows to use that folder. Since a lot of programs are sticking shit in the documents and settings folder.
Then I make a folder for downloads, a folder for my media files, and then I make child directories for video and audio. And then furthur down there I orginize it depending on what I'm puting in there. I dont really download much avi/mp3 anyways since I much rather buy my anime/music than ripp it off.
And well, finding shit is easier I find when I dont have everything in one spot. That's why I love drive letters I just open up the run menu and enter the drive letter.
I much rather type stuff than point and click. If it's easier to point and click, I do it, though otherwise screw it. Sometimes using the command prompt makes moving files around easier or deleting folders with tons of files because it's not wasting time tellng you about it with the little graphic progress bar thingy. Partly why I hate macs because most of the OS forces you to point and click, which is pretty stupid. Pointing and clicking might be easier for a new user, but it's very slow.

Re: Drive setup
Then you should REALLY get a Linux OS. With some most of what you do is through the terminal (equivalent to the Command Prompt, but used a lot more generally). You can get ones that range, of course, in how much you are likely or need to use it, and such, but most that I've seen and most more advanced users I know use it a lot and a lot of them are designed for that purpose. You don't have to, but many are designed with users who use it a good bit in mind.

Re: Drive setup
Yeah, if I had the skills I could use Linux very comfortably. Pretty much all the software I use you can get the linux version too.
aMSN, pidgin Firefox Dosbox Various game console emulators
Probably the only commercial software I used often anymore is the OS. Though once I learn how to use linux I'll just keep Windows around for when I want to play a game or use the Office software (which will be a nessicity really for the next year atleast far as I can see) As time goes on Windows starts to progresively get more annoying now and then, even though it works well for me.

Re: Drive setup
yea, all those programs you listed can even be found in most repositories so you can VERY easily download and install them. apt-get will be your new friend. A few of those come pre-installed with many distributions standard. The Games you can get on linux are also pretty good actually, better than you'd expect. I have a windows boot simply for games, but a lot of Windows games can play easily enough or with little tweaking on WINE or other linux programs. Some can't very easily, very new games and some obscure few years old games mostly. But, I find more and more even though I have it I don't use the Windows side at all even for playing those games that won't run properly on linux, with all the other linux games I have and new ones I can get so easily and freely, and get rid of equally as easily as I like.

Re: Drive setup
Pretty much the only games I like on the PC is Sim City. Sim City 2k probably will entertain me for awhile, since I'm still figuring it out, I can play it in DOSbox. Though Sim City 4, that game is pretty resource intensive, not sure it'll work in WINE/Virtual Machine.

Re: Drive setup
Well, from what I've seen plenty of people have gotten SimCity 4 working in Ubuntu, including under WINE. I saw some reports of some issues with the expansion pack, Rush Hour, crashing WINE at parts or using CPU insanely at certain stages, but thats about it and was on 8.10, an older version of Ubuntu from the current one which is supposed to use CPU more effectively.
Then again, if you're into Sim City games, there are several OpenSource versions of in the Ubuntu add/remove list alone.

Re: Drive setup
Yeah so this is the screenshot of my current setup and at the same time I'll be able to use the drives in my new computer when I feel like upgrading this shit box. C: Is the newest drive, I have my page file there cause it's faster. D: Houses Windows 2k, it's there because I had to install it from Windows 98 E: Has my animu shit F: is a CD-ROM G: is the daemon tools virtualised drive. I was thinking for shits and giggles sticking this thing in a server case and puting more drives in.
