Been there, done that. Rosetta stone, various books, several tutors (both over the internet and in person) and I watch Japanese dramas, news and anime (duh). I've learned about cultural language quirks and the history of the language and people to gain insight into the subtly of certain phrases.

It turns out the Japanese language is more of a bastard language than English. Funny side note: the Japanese kimono is adapted from the Korean hanbok. The Japanese men's kimono is the Korean women's hanbok and the Japanese women's kimono is the Korean men's hanbok. The Koreans view the Japanese as a country of cross dressers.

I can speak enough Japanese to get by, but reading it is touch and go.

@Fluffy, ah good then, we may be able to get a decent product after all. Sorry for underestimating you.

I just noticed that when you put text in the box on Google's translator it shows the romaji version underneath, that should be useful.


Anyway, that text I posted is only about 2.3% of the text in the entire game, I'm estimating around 10000-11000 lines total. I'm still working on figuring out the rest of the control data so I can grab all of it, there are parts of the game that cause my parser to crash because it can't read the data right...

No, it's misreading the control data because I haven't figured some of it out yet, since it doesn't know what the commands mean it ends up trying to use some of the data in ways that it never should. It'll get fixed when I figure out what commands it's reading incorrectly, and find out how they're really supposed to work.

I've got a decent grip on the translations but there are some that need context. Japanese is a vague and ambiguous language. Some I want to think are spoken dialog but without quotes I'm leaning towards internal dialog. The simplest phrases are actually the most difficult: "matte" can mean slow down, wait, not so fast, slower, not yet and more but for a good translation it needs to fit in the English. I've got a good portion of the text translated but parts don't look right.

Is there any way to extract the control codes as comments? If I had some way to see what was an option or what was dialog and so forth I could nail this down.

I'm guessing that the three string blocks are options but it looks like they aren't always what you say only what you're thinking. Some are straight forward and the Google translation is almost accurate enough to leave alone. I like all the "AAAh~!" and such strings. I'll probably leave them alone for the most part.

The「」 symbols in the japanese script are like quotation marks, anything inside them「like this」is spoken dialogue, anything outside of them is narraration.

I believe lines 42-46 are the only menu options here.

The control codes would make the menu options and girl's spoken dialogue obvious, but since the male protagonist has no voice acting they wouldn't separate his spoken dialogue from the narraration.

I'm finally back from my holiday vacation, and I've finished ripping the text. 10,084 lines total.

Fluffy, these rips contain comments for menus and voice acting like you requested. #24 is the one you've been working on if you want to use the new file.


I've started working on a game engine in Flash capable of using a text data format heavily based on the one from the original game. The plan is to be able to just reuse the original data with a few conversions to address how graphics/sound need to be handled.
