Stories in games.
I love stories in games. There are those games that invent new ways to tell stories like Bioshock, or those that tell good ones like God of War. There are also those that have stories that are questionable as stories like Braid. Still in the limits though.
Also for those saying Fuck you god of war is stupid. You don't know the history of the series. It was intended as a singular game but became a series because it was so popular against the creator's wishes. It's the only modern greek tragedy in recent existence. Guy in war makes a deal with gods to escape the war, but god makes him kill family. He gets revenge and kills god before killing himself for his mistakes. Perfect greek tragedy right there.
any good story based games you guys like?

Re: Stories in games.
Well one could of course bring up the Half Life series but who hasn't already done that? It is well documented that it has a pretty sweet story behind it I would like to mention The Suffering because it has an pretty unique and incredible story behind it as well as being really creepy It is about a prisoner named Torque who is on death row at the Abbot state penitentiary on Carnate Island he is on death row for murdering his wife and children He does not remember anything about what happened of course so their is no way to know if he committed the crime or not anyway suddenly there is something like an earthquake on the Island and from the earth comes horrific abominations each a representative of a particular method of execution In the chaos you must seek a way to escape the island and find out what type of man you really are

Re: Stories in games.
I played it and the sequel. Thinking about it I'd like to bring up Silent Hill 2.
It's one of the most critically acclaimed games out there.
I have yet to play it as I can't find a copy. I'm going for emulation soon which is hard, because PS2 emulation sucks. anyway, it's known for being crazy scary but integrating the story into the game extremely well, and using it effectively. Originally seeing reviews I didn't care. But over time it's become more and more well known up till now.

Re: Stories in games.
Oh you did? I hardly ever find anyone who have actually played it So what did you think? After playing that game I ended up reading in the belly of the beast by Jack Abbot and I watched all of OZ
but yeah I was actually going to bring that up as well You should definitely play it Silent Hill 2 is really awesome I ordered it off amazon for the xbox for like a dollar but really it is a great game the only thing I did not really like about it was the fact that the combat sucks and the controls are a little weird at first..
Oh have you played Max Payne?

Re: Stories in games.
Should watch Oz, beat Max Payne 1 & 2, can't find Silent hill 2 for PS2, Beat VtM: Bloodlines with the usermade patches.
Max payne tried to be grim but it was more a cinematic action game that dealt with the constraints of it's time well. The story was ok, but the gameplay was awesome.
VtM: Bloodlines had an ok plotline. The characters were well developed if a bit ridiculous. Sometimes I felt like I was playing Postal 2 if it had been redesigned as something other than the worst game ever by the art style and design. The gameplay was fun despite it's problems. Really it's a great game and one of the best lesser seen ones out there, but it's filled to the brim with problems overturning it's promise. Still worth playing.
Things I'm looking forward to this year for story are: Bioshock Infinite(Gonna have a good but not gret plotine, but will probably look at how to tell stories in a better way.), Spec Ops: The Line(Putting Call of Duty style heroes in morally ambiguous situations and making you really have to think about what you do? YES), Far Cry 3(Seems like less of a plotline and more of character focus. But that's not a bad thing)

Re: Stories in games.
I blame the company as they have a history of bad QA testing and bugs in their games, not just this one. Activision did rush it, but they'd probably spend the time adding more features rather than fixing it. Really it's the community that saw the promise and fixed it up into something playable.

Re: Stories in games.
You could try the Metal Gear Solid series which has both good game play that gets better with each sequel and a pretty good story, bar MGS4. You could also try the Deus Ex games. The Yakuza games are pretty story heavy as well. If you want to try some JRPGs try the Xenogears saga. If you're down for playing some older games, the Baldur's gate series and Planescape are options, so are the original Fallout games. E.Y.E divine cybermancy is pretty good too.

Re: Stories in games.
There're some great stories of games out there, Here's a list of my favourite ones: - Mass Effect Series (up to the ending, that sucked bad) - Last Story - Xenoblade Chronicles - Assassins Creed Series (up to Black Flag, haven't played that one yet) - Tales of The Abyss - Fire Emblem Awakening - Onimusha Series - Prince of Persia Series - Tomb Raider - ...
That was a short list of what I like, but it's not a complete list. I really liked playing these games, because the story kept me in it

EPIC NECROMANCING.
I approve.
-
Some games I play don't really have a story; but are so myriad, I can't help but write a story in my head as I go along.

Re: Stories in games.
I think the best games are the ones where you and three idiots of your closest friends pile into a car and go dumpster diving then begin throwing old cellphones/HDDs and whacking the crap out of each other with anything sword-like you find. I have LARP'd using nothing but other people's garbage and had hours of fun.
"Singles" (sex oriented The Sims knock-off) is actually very difficult and you begin to imagine this entire reason why it's so much trouble to get them to knock boots. I imagine that the guy is secretly collecting crumbs in his pubic hair and wants to have it mold over like a sloth in order to have psychedelic mushrooms grow on his junk; fucking would disrupt the process—or he's succeeded and doesn't want to share. The girl is actually a catholic nun undercover trying to find out what christian life is like to undermine the Jesus-cock suckers; only the nun is actually a jesuit anyway, a secret jew, and she really wants the dick but has to make sure her "sisters" aren't watching her.
Don't even get me started on Terraria (you can pronounce that "what Minecraft would be like if it were programmed in a real language" and I won't correct you) and "the Twins."

Re: Stories in games.
Probably the best story from a game that I know of if the one from the Final Fantasy VIII. I don't know when it was exactly released but I do know that there are still many fans talking about it.

X and X-2 are getting a HD remake and there's a book I think that came out recently for them.

It's a shame they don't remake that one, instead they say it's not time yet, we're not advanced enough with our technology, maybe in 5 years or so, they might decide putting that excuse aside and finaly release it, with awesome CG.
