Post freedom of speech
Is freedom of speech a thing of the past? Well, it's slowly geting eroded in Canada. Atleast I believe so. For example there are laws here about hate speech. You're not allowed to express hatred for on things about race, sexual orientation, or gender and certain other things like religion and such. I think it's wrong that they do that. I think people should be able to be hateful towards other people, it's freedom of speech. Even though I think it's rude to be hateful.

Then america has things such as the patriot act, effectively jailing anyone who express hatred for the american goverment, they get deemed as terrorists for using certain words or saying different things, even though a lot of people they jail dont have an intention to attack the goverment. For example, I'm paranoid right now that even saying the words patriot act might make the american goverment paranoid.

1-What people?
2- Do you really think anyone who finds FH will get scared because of yom posting his usual LSD-ridden madness?
3- It has always been my opinion the people give up basic rights too easily in order to achieve something else, a man's freedom should be limited only by himself, but then again that would require a magical society where people are taught to think by themselves and not only to bend to the rules they're told to obey.

The Patriot Act didn't necessarily restrict free speech, it just gave government probable cause to monitor you if you seem like a terrorist (which could be based on things you've said).

It's an infringement on our privacy rights, but not our free speech rights. In America, we probably have the MOST free speech rights. Problems come mainly from the FCC regulating the airwaves (and with the Obama administration, the FCC wanting to regulate the internet). However, this means that you can't say certain vulgar things, or else you will be fined, on the airwaves. This is wrong, but considering this is pretty much the only infringement on free speech rights within this country, that's not that bad. However, we could do better.

And, there are certain anti-defamation groups that try to get "hate-speech" laws passed. As well, hate crime laws can add years to someone's sentence if it seems that they did something because they were racist or a bigot. That, in a way, is against our free speech rights.

Is all of this wrong? You bet. But thanks to the internet becoming a rapidly expanding source of communication and media, it's possible that FCC problems will become a thing of the past (as long as the Obama Administration is unsuccessful in getting the FCC to regulate the internet).

Ooops I made a booboo. I'm wrong in my first post in this thread. Read this:

Quote:
Section 2(b) of the Charter states that "Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: ... freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication." The section potentially could cover a wide range of action, from commercial expression to political expression; from journalistic privilege to hate speech to pornography. The jurisprudence of the Supreme Court (see links below) has largely been an attempt to carve out: first, the purpose of s. 2(b) (what values does it seek to protect, who should be entitled to its protection); and second, the scope of s. 2(b) (what is 'expression'?).
