It's all silly, really. I myself used to sit and think of all sorts of ridiculous subgenres: gore rap, harsh hop, gabbacore... well that last one actually might exist in some form, but it doesn't really matter unless there's a significant artist or two behind it. That's what turns an inside joke into a legit movement. To me a genre only qualifies as such if there's more than one person doing it. Also, "more" Canadian indie does not qualify as a separate genre, I mean come on man :psh

HEY! We canz du r own kinz uf musikz!

Of course you can, it's just a matter of if whatever kind of music you want to do is different enough and imitated enough to warrant its own genre.
Mindless Self Indulgence have their own genre (can't be bothered to look it up right now) that describes their particular style; it's silly and that's fine, though they intentionally made that genre for the sake of making fun of other genres that are similarly silly.
I have nothing against creating something new or doing your own thing, by all means please do, but you can't rightfully call it a "movement" if the only one stepping to your beat is you.
I had a journal/sketchbook, among many others, that was full of theoretical genres like this; if I find it I'll make a separate topic dedicated to generating more, if not to illustrate just how silly this all is then to generate some new ideas for bands that may be looking for an inspiration, then it'll become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I don't think you understand the world of music.

I make a habit to study all kinds of music and even though in some cases the genre is contrived it does help to differential what you're listening to. Also in some cases, and i say this without trying to sound like a hipster; there are genres that have either become extinct or are obscure to the point only a small number people actually have heard of them. (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popcorn_%28music_style%29)

A genuine interest in and knowledge of different kinds of music, their stylistic origins and evolutions does not make one a hipster.

Being a trendy MF who becomes interested in something merely due to obscurity (see: elitism) or to attach themselves to a culture / identity (see: biter) is what makes one a hipster.

if you click on any of the genres, you get a tiny window with a ">>" symbol that links you to that genre's own dedicated page. That page consists of another map much like the genre map, but this time linked with artists in the genre you clicked. And guess where those artist links go?

Spotify.

Let me tell you something about Spotify: Spotify doesn't need to exist.
It's a belated corporate response to streaming audio technology thats already been perfected FOR FREE by literally everybody else for years now. It's existence is almost as worse as the RIAA's.
I admit I'm exaggerating a bit; what I don't want to exaggerate is how your wallet will thank you for avoiding this wholly unnecessary app-that-doesn't-need-to-be-an-app.

I don't want to be the guy who jumps on the chance to shit all over something immediately, then shits on it some more and piles that shit up until you can't tell what was being shat on in the first place... beating a dead horse, that's what I was trying to say.

But seriously, fuck these guys.

While I can't really comment on Spotify as I don't use it. I will say this...

As a web developer I understand what's going on here. Whenever you're building something like this which aggregates content, you want to use an API that has the best options for you as a developer. Now there are a couple of platforms that they could of used but my guess is that the Spotify API was easiest to implement as it has a very high selection of music.

From a web developer's point of view this is a sound move to incorporate all the items in the list with three major benefits. One being the content is streamed from another server which keeps his bandwidth from being high. The other is the response time and adaptability to his site. The last being that its a commonly used platform that already has many users which adds to simplicity of his site for the users.

There is another site which uses a similar approach called plug.dj but instead of having a spotify api, it uses soundcloud and youtube api.

When you're building a new platform, you shouldn't go against the grain, that shuts people out. What you want to do is incorporate things that are already being used. It makes it easier for users to adapt to your system and helps build traffic.

IDK man, maybe. It makes sense: soundcloud is more for independents, not archivists so there wouldn't be a good representation of all the genres listed there; while I know nothing of web design, on the user end I would agree that YouTube embeds are definitely more complex than music players ( regardless of how functional those players may or may not be )...

I'll admit it's entirely possible that they chose Spotify out of convenience. The whole thing just stinks of a promo deal to me. "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours." Like, I don't think this genres site would've existed without Spotify, or if it did, it'd just be a list off of some blogspot or something: not an interactive influence map that clearly had some money put into it.

Truth be told, I have never used Spotify either, but I know enough about it that the idea behind it disgusts me. I mean you could literally use anything else: Pandora, YouTube, the iTunes store... there's no need to pay for any of this, so why start now?

hahaha, I don't know if you meant to write "bitter" instead of "biter" there or not, but if you did that describes me to a T!
Also I'm being a bit pedantic here but I have to mention, elitism only comes about if one holds their knowledge of something obscure over the heads of everybody else, as if they're expected to know it or are deemed inferior for not knowing it.
The moral is, don't waste half a decade trying to get in/fit in with such shit like I did because "bitter" is just the nicest way to describe how miserable I am after it's all been said and done.

It has free and premium services; so basically ads and no ads, respectively.

Think of it like free flash games on here or on old (2005ish) newgrounds vs. "free" apps with in-game purchasing to buy things necessary to complete the game or otherwise enhance your experience: it's just kind of a dick move, is all.

Like, YouTube is just there. You will have to sit through ads depending on what videos you watch, but at the end of the day you can always click off of it, no obligations.
Spotify just wants to stick its hooks into you, and once it does it won't let go of you so easy.

It was already like that before they integrated spotify. It's not a blog, Its been custom coded to be a plotter chart from the very beginning. And when you clicked on it before it cued up only a couple of songs from the genre. I presume the integration was for people who wanted a nice playlist to "explore" the genre.

Also spotify doesn't force anyone to pay for their service, and the site playlists still work with the integration whether you've payed for it or not. I highly doubt the devopler of this niche site gets any money for this and I hightly doublt they are even an affilate.

Honestly, spotify plus adblock has made me not even need to pirate music anymore. I've jumped around music stations over and over again and right now spotify blows everything out of the water because I can legally listen to an entire artists discography by pressing play and not having to give a fuck, oh, and it's all fucking free.

But thats the web version on the desktop, if apps on the phone suck well I guess they fucking suck but just get a hacked phone.
